SUMMARYWhen you connect to the Internet using an independent Internet service provider, an Internet Protocol (IP) address and Domain Name Server (DNS) address may be automatically assigned to you (using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)). In some cases, these numbers must be manually assigned to each user of the service. These are called static addresses. Internet Explorer for Windows 3.1 does not, by default, support static Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) information for use while connecting to your Internet service provider. This article describes how to configure a connection to use static IP and DNS server addresses.
