The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 3.01 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

You may receive the following error message when you install the Internet Explorer 3.0b/3.01b Security Update on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:

   Rename Error

An error occurred renaming a file: "The process cannot access the file
because it is being used by another process." (error #32).

   Current File Name: [MSHTML.DLL]

   Retry, Skip File, Abort?

CAUSE

This error occurs if Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 1 or earlier is installed, and Internet Explorer is running when you try to install the Security Update.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, quit Internet Explorer by clicking Quit on the File menu, and then click Retry in the dialog box to install the Security Update.

If you have already chosen to abort the installation, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. Type "cmd.exe" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.

  3. At the command prompt, type the following command

          cd <%systemroot%>\system32

where <%systemroot%> is the folder in which you installed Windows NT. Press ENTER after you type the command.

  4. Type each of the following commands and press ENTER after typing each one:

          del shdocvw.dll
          del mshtml.dll
          ren shdocvw.bad *.dll
          ren mshtml.bad *.dll

  5. Close the command window and restart your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Internet Explorer 3.0b/3.01b Security Update. If you are running Windows NT Service Pack 2 or later, you are not affected by this problem.
