The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install or remove Internet Explorer 4.0, settings for a program may be lost.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the program uses a configuration file to record user-defined settings and the program is not closed before you install or remove Internet Explorer.

The settings are lost because Internet Explorer 4.0 closes any running programs without allowing them to finish running processes, which prevents the program from saving settings to a configuration file.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem, quit all running programs before installing or uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0.

MORE INFORMATION

Allow programs to continue running before installing or uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0 may cause temporary (.tmp) files to be left on the hard disk, or may cause unsaved program settings to be lost.
