SYMPTOMSWhen you attempt to install an earlier version of Internet Explorer on a computer on which Internet Explorer 4.0 (Version 4.71.1712.6) is running in Browser only mode (the Windows Desktop Update is not installed), several version conflict messages are displayed, but no other error messages are displayed and the installation process proceeds normally. After the earlier version of Internet Explorer is installed, you may be unable to start Internet Explorer or Internet Explorer may not function properly. The behavior that occurs after the earlier version of Internet Explorer is installed depends on whether you choose to keep the existing files or replace them when the version conflict messages are displayed.
RESOLUTIONIf you install Internet Explorer 4.0 and then decide that you want to return to an earlier version of Internet Explorer, you should uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 before you install the earlier version.
