SYMPTOMS

Active Desktop items that host Java programs may stop working when Internet Explorer 4.0 is offline.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Java program has been removed from the Temporary Internet Files folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Empty the Temporary Internet Files folder or increase the amount of hard disk space it uses by using the appropriate method:

        - Empty the Temporary Internet Files folder by following these
          steps:

          1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the View menu.

          2. On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet

             Files.

          3. Click OK when you are prompted to delete the files, and then
             click OK again.

        - Increase the amount of hard disk space the Temporary Internet Files
folder uses by following these steps:

          1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the View menu.

          2. On the General tab, click Settings under Temporary Internet
             Files.

          3. Move the "Amount of disk space to use" slider to the right.

          4. Click OK, and then click OK again.

  2. Connect to the Internet.

  3. Right-click an empty area on the desktop, point to Active Desktop, and then click Update Now to update the Active Desktop items.

MORE INFORMATION

Active Desktop items are retrieved from the cache when Internet Explorer 4.0 is offline. If the cache reaches its maximum size, Java programs may be automatically removed from the cache to make room for current downloads. If an Active Desktop item hosts a Java program that has been removed from the cache and Internet Explorer 4.0 is offline, the Active Desktop item stops working.
