Cannot Edit Web Pages on Internet Using FrontPage Express

SYMPTOMS

When you try to edit a Web page using FrontPage Express, you may receive the following error message:

   Unable to open the location <Web address>.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because FrontPage Express cannot edit a Web page using a modem connection to the Internet.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, you must edit the Web page while offline after it is saved in the Temporary Internet Files folder. To do so, use one of the following methods:

Method 1 --------

Edit the Web page using Internet Explorer. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. While you are connected to the Internet using Internet Explorer, load the Web page you want to edit.

  2. Quit Internet Explorer by clicking on Exit on the File menu.

  3. Start Internet Explorer 4.0.

  4. On the File menu, click Work Offline.

  5. In the Address box, type in the address of the Web page you want to edit, and then press ENTER.

    Note: If you are prompted to connect or stay offline, click Stay Offline.

  6. On the Edit menu, click Page.

Method 2

Edit the Web Page using FrontPage Express. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. While you are connected to the Internet using Internet Explorer, load the Web page you want to edit.

  2. Quit Internet Explorer by clicking on Exit on the File menu.

  3. Start Internet Explorer 4.0.

  4. On the File menu, click Work Offline.

  5. Quit Internet Explorer by clicking on Exit on the File menu.

  6. Start FrontPage Express.

  7. On the File menu, click Open.

  8. Click From Location, and then type the address of the Web page you loaded in step 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in FrontPage Express. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

This problem does not occur when use FrontPage 97 or Word 97 as your Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) editor.
