The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use Internet Explorer with a proxy server (a server on a local area network that lets you connect to the Internet without using a modem) when America Online 3.0 for Windows 95 is your Internet service provider (ISP), you may receive the following error message:

   Failed to Parse HTTP.
Your request does not appear to be properly formed.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" check box is selected in Internet Explorer. America Online 3.0 for Windows 95 does not support Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) 1.1 requests through a proxy server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps in Internet Explorer:

  1. On the View menu, click Internet Options.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.

  3. Under HTTP 1.1 Settings, click the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" check box to clear it, and then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer 4.0 includes the following settings to control the use of the HTTP 1.1 protocol:

  • Use HTTP 1.1
  • Use HTTP 1.1 Through Proxy Connections

The Use HTTP 1.1 check box is selected and the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" check box is cleared by default.

This error message is generated by TurboWeb, America Online's proxy server.
