Thumbnail Views Not Displayed for Some File Types

SYMPTOMS

When you enable Thumbnail view for your folders and configure Windows Explorer or My Computer to be viewed as a Web page, the Thumbnail images for some file types may not be displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you remove and re-create the file association for a file type. The registry entry used by the Windows Desktop Update component to display Thumbnail images is not updated properly when you re- create the file association.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

  • Reinstall the Windows Desktop Update component. For information about removing and installing the Windows Desktop Update component, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Click Start, click Run, type the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:

          regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll
    

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and 4.01 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
