This article describes how to troubleshoot scripting errors in Internet
Explorer versions 4.0 and 4.01.

When you finish the steps in each of the following sections, test to
determine if the scripting error still occurs. If the issue is resolved,
do not continue to the remaining sections. If the issue is not resolved,
continue to the next section.
To troubleshoot scripting errors in Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and
4.01 for Windows 95, use the following steps:
Disable Smooth Scrolling
To disable the Smooth Scrolling feature, use the following steps:
- Start Internet Explorer, and then click Internet Options on the View
menu.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Use Smooth Scrolling check
box to clear it.
- Click OK, and then quit Internet Explorer.
Disable Show Window Contents While Dragging
If you do not have Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95 installed on your
computer, skip to the next section. To disable this feature, use the
following steps:
- Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
- Click the Plus tab, click the Show Window Contents While Dragging check
box to clear it, and then click OK.
Reduce Number of Colors Windows Is Using
To reduce the number of colors Windows is using, use the following steps:
- Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Settings
tab.
- In the Colors box, click a number of colors that is less than the
current setting, click OK, and then click Yes.
Reduce Screen Area
To reduce the screen area, use the following steps:
- Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Settings
tab.
- In the Screen Area box, move the Screen Area slider to a screen area
that is lower than your current screen area setting, click OK, and then
click Yes.
Disable Hardware Acceleration
To disable hardware acceleration, use the following steps:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Performance tab, and then click Graphics.
- Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, click OK, click Close,
and then click Yes.
Disable the Active Desktop
To disable the Active Desktop, use the following steps:
- Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Web tab.
- Click the "View my Active Desktop as a web page" check box to clear it,
and then click OK.
NOTE: If any of the preceding sections resolved the issue, you may need
to update the driver for your display adapter. For information about
obtaining an updated driver for your display adapter, contact the
manufacturer of your display adapter, or the manufacturer of your
computer. If the steps in the preceding sections did not resolve the
issue, continue to the next section.
Install Current Version of Microsoft DirectX

Delete Internet Related Folders
To delete Internet related folders, use the following steps:
- Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message,
press F8, and then choose Command Prompt Only.
- At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER
after each command, and typing "y" (without quotation marks) if you
are prompted to confirm deleting a folder:
cd windows
deltree tempor~1
deltree cookies
deltree history
deltree favori~1
NOTE: These folders are re-created when you restart your computer.
- Restart your computer.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
- In the Named box, type "downloaded program files" (without quotation
marks), and then click Find Now.
- Double-click the Downloaded Program Files folder, right-click a file in
this folder, and then click Remove. Continue to remove files from this
folder in this manner until all files are removed, and then restart
your computer.
