Error Message When You Quit Internet Explorer

SYMPTOMS

When you quit Internet Explorer, you may receive either of the following error messages:

Windows 95

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

When you click Details, either of the following details is displayed:
  • IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module MSJAVA.DLL at <address>.
  • IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at <address>.

Windows NT 4.0

   The instruction at "0x7c040bdc" referenced memory at "0x028bfd78."
   The memory could not be "read."
   Click OK to terminate the application.

CAUSE

These error messages can occur if you quit Internet Explorer after running a Java program.

RESOLUTION

This problem is resolved by the following updated file for Internet Explorer:

   Msjava.dll  version 4.79.2401  dated 1/30/98  10:18am  1,178,624 bytes

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
