SYMPTOMSInternet Explorer (IE) version 2.0 can be installed on Windows 3.1 client with LAN Manager version 2.2c plus TCP/IP Utility IP Stack and Sockets.dll dialer. However, it fails to resolve hosts names to IP addresses via DNS/DNR. The numeric IP address on the URL works fine. The \Lanman.dos\Etc\Hosts file can be used and works for host name resolution. NOTE: Both DNS/DNR and socket are activated in LAN Manager.
RESOLUTION
Use the numeric IP address instead of the HostName in the URL; for example, http://198.105.232.5 instead of http://www.microsoft.com or use HOSTS file.
