BUG: Scrolling Database Designer Hangs with Large Diagram

SYMPTOMS

Opening and immediately scrolling a Database Diagram containing 300-plus tables causes the Database Designer to hang or causes the screen to be improperly painted. This error occurs more frequently on machines with low memory (24 MB).

RESOLUTION

Wait until the diagram is fully loaded before scrolling with the arrow buttons on the scroll bar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Open a Database Diagram that contains approximately 300 tables on a machine with 24 MB RAM.

  2. As soon as the diagram paints, start scrolling the diagram using the arrow buttons on the scroll bar.

The Database Designer hangs or incorrectly paints on the screen.
