IntelliPoint & IntelliType Setup Generate Incorrect Errors

Last reviewed: October 25, 1996
Article ID: Q120711
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Natural Keyboard with IntelliType software version 1.0
  • Microsoft IntelliPoint software version 1.0
  • Microsoft IntelliPoint Software Home Edition version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install either the Microsoft Natural Keyboard with IntelliType software version 1.0 or the Microsoft Home and Standard Mouse with IntelliPoint software version 1.0 at the MS-DOS level and you select an unavailable drive letter, incorrect error messages are displayed. These messages may indicate that you need to make more disk space available or run a custom installation, rather than use a valid drive letter.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, check the following items and adjust as necessary:

  • Make sure the drive on which you are installing the mouse or keyboard is an actual drive.
  • Make sure you are not using any extended characters.
  • Do not use a RAM drive unless your computer preserves this memory when it is turned off.
  • If the selected drive is a network drive, make sure the computer connects to a network each time it is turned on.
  • Make sure there is enough available space.

MORE INFORMATION

Installations of both IntelliType and IntelliPoint at the Windows level generate the following correct error message if you try to install it to a nonexistent or unavailable drive letter:

<Setup Message> The path you typed is not valid

However, if you try to install either IntelliType or IntelliPoint to a nonexistent or unavailable drive letter at the MS-DOS level, the following incorrect errors are displayed:

With IntelliType

ERROR: Installation option exceeds available disk space. Exit and free
some space or select another drive.

This error message incorrectly indicates that there is not enough available disk space. This error can be generated for a variety of reasons unrelated to disk space.

With IntelliPoint

ERROR: Installation option exceeds available disk space. Use custom
   installation option.

This error message incorrectly indicates that there is not enough available disk space and to use the Custom Installation option. This error can occur when you used Custom Installation to select a different drive and or path than the default (C:\MSINPUT). This error can also be generated for a variety of reasons unrelated to disk space.
