The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Mouse driver for Windows, versions 9.0, 9.01
  • Microsoft Natural Keyboard with IntelliType software version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Microsoft Mouse driver on a Toshiba laptop running Windows 3.1, the following occurs:

  • The mouse becomes erratic within Windows

    -or-

  • You receive the following error message:

          Duplicate Device: VKD

CAUSE

These problems occur because the Toshiba original equipment manufacturer (OEM) version of Windows changes the KEYBOARD= entry in the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file from KEYBOARD=*VKD to DEVICE=*VKD. The Microsoft Mouse driver setup program looks for the KEYBOARD= entry to add the information "<drive>:<path>\MOUSEVKD.386."

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, remove the DEVICE=*VKD line from the [386Enh] section and make sure that section includes the KEYBOARD=<drive>:<path>\MOUSEVKD.386 line.
