Mouse Support for Nonstandard IRQs and IO AddressesLast reviewed: September 16, 1996Article ID: Q97847 |

SUMMARYMicrosoft Mouse version 9.0 drivers support standard serial mouse ports and mouse ports that adhere to the IBM PS/2 standard. The drivers do not support nonstandard IRQs and IO addresses for serial, PS/2, InPort bus board, or old-style bus board (the precursor of the InPort). Microsoft is considering support for nonstandard serial mouse ports in a future release of these drivers.
MORE INFORMATION
PS/2 Port and MouseThe PS/2 port and mouse are handled by the BIOS directly; the mouse driver generally doesn't directly interact with the hardware. If the machine has the appropriate BIOS interface set up correctly (using Interrupt 15H), the Microsoft Mouse functions correctly.
Serial Port and MouseIf you have nonstandard settings, it is most likely that you are using a serial connection. Both the Windows-based and MS-DOS-based mouse drivers support COM1 and COM2 only. COM1 is defined to be IO address 3f8h and IRQ 4; COM2 is defined to be IO address 2f8h and IRQ 3. Note: Version 9.0 of the Microsoft Mouse does not work on COM3 in either Windows or MS-DOS. As a possible workaround, you can try to configure COM3 to appear exactly like COM1 or COM2 (with the appropriate IO address and IRQ).
InPort Bus BoardMicrosoft supports only those IO addresses and IRQs represented by the jumpers on the card. The primary IO address is 23Ch with a selectable IRQ of 2,3,4, or 5. The secondary IO address is 238h with a selectable IRQ of 2,3,4, or 5.
Old-Style Bus BoardMicrosoft supports only those IO addresses and IRQs represented by the jumpers on the card. The only IO address supported is 23Ch with a selectable IRQ of 2,3,4, or 5.
