The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office for Windows, version 4.0
SUMMARY
When you choose the Office Setup And Uninstall command from the Microsoft
Office Manager (MOM) toolbar, you may receive following error message:
Cannot find Microsoft Office setup. Please start Setup another way.
Also, during certain Microsoft Office installations, an Office Setup
icon will not be created.
This is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
During a Typical or Complete Installation from the Microsoft Office 4.0
Standard or Professional packages, the Microsoft Office SETUP.EXE file is
installed. In addition, an Office Setup icon is created and placed in the
same program group where the Microsoft Office application icons are
created.
When you double-click the Office Setup icon or when you choose the Office
Setup And Uninstall command from the Microsoft Office Manager toolbar menu,
the SETUP.EXE file runs Office Maintenance Mode Setup.
The SETUP.EXE file and the Office Setup icon are unavailable in the
following installations of the Microsoft Office 4.0 Standard or
Professional packages:
- Workstation Installation
- Minimum Installation
- Custom/Complete Installation (if the Tools option is not selected)
These installations cause the above message to be displayed when you choose
the Office Setup And Uninstall command from the Microsoft Office menu.
WORKAROUNDS
To run Setup when the SETUP.EXE file is not installed, follow the
appropriate procedure below.
If Microsoft Office was installed from a network server
If Microsoft Office was installed from a network server, create a program
icon that will run setup from the server:
- In Windows Program Manager, switch to the group where you want to add
the icon.
- In Program Manager, choose New from the File menu.
The New Program Object dialog box appears.
- Select the Program Item option, and then choose OK. The Program Item
Properties dialog box appears.
- In the Description box, type a unique description for the icon.
- In the Command Line box, type the name of the program file, including
the path and extension (see below for command line syntax).
If all defaults were chosen during the installation, use the
appropriate command line below for the icon
- If you are using Workstation Installation
L:\MSOFFICE\SETUP.EXE /T C:\MSOFFICE\WINWORD\SETUP\SETUP.STF
- If you are using Minimum Installation
L:\MSOFFICE\SETUP.EXE /T C:\MSOFFICE\SETUP\SETUP.STF
- If you are using Custom/Complete
L:\MSOFFICE\SETUP.EXE /T C:\MSOFFICE\SETUP.STF
where L:\MSOFFICE is the path to the Microsoft Office network server
installation and the path following the /T switch is the path to the
SETUP.STF file.
- Microsoft Office Maintenance Mode Setup can be run from this icon.
If Microsoft Office was installed from a floppy disk drive
If Microsoft Office was installed from a floppy disk drive, to rerun setup
from Microsoft Office 4.0 Disk 1:
- Insert the disk labeled Disk1 Setup in the floppy disk drive.
- In Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu.
- In the Command Line box, type A:\Setup (or B:\Setup).
- Choose Add/Remove from the Microsoft Office Setup dialog box.
- In the Maintenance Installation dialog box, select the Tools option.
NOTE: Do not clear (remove the checks) from any other Options. Clearing
these options will cause the Maintenance Installation to uninstall the
cleared options.

from the Office Setup And Uninstall command on the Microsoft Office
Manager toobar menu.
