SYMPTOM

When you print the Microsoft Office Assistant Business Plan document (OAENCORE.DOC) or the Newsletter document (OANEWSLT.DOC) to a PostScript printer, only a few pages of the document are printed and you receive a PostScript error message.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when there is not enough printer memory available on your PostScript printer. OAENCORE.DOC requires at least 1250K of virtual memory to print, and OANEWSLT.DOC requires 400K. If your printer has too little virtual memory when you print either of these documents, the print job fails unpredictably (this failure generally produces a PostScript error message after a few pages have printed successfully).

WORKAROUNDS

To print OAENCORE.DOC or OANEWSLT.DOC without receiving an error message, do any of the following:

  • Increase the virtual memory setting for your PostScript printer. Note that you can only use this workaround if the setting is currently a lower value than the amount of virtual memory on your printer. You can change this setting by using the following steps:

    1. In File Manager, select the file TESTPS.TXT (located in the

          WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.)

    2. From the File menu, choose Copy. In the To box, type the port for

the printer to which you are printing. For example, type "LPT1:"
         (without the quotation marks).

    3. When the printer has finished printing, the printed page displays

Max Printer VM (KB) and Max Suggested VM (KB) values. Make a note
          of these values.

    4. In the Main group in Program Manager, double-click the Control

Panel icon. In the Control Panel, double-click the Printers icon.

    5. From the Installed Printers list, select your PostScript printer and

choose Setup. In the Setup dialog box for the printer, choose the
Options button. In the Options dialog box, choose the Advanced
          button.

    6. Change the Virtual Memory setting to the Max Suggested VM (KB)

value that you found in step 3.

    -or-

  • Print the document a few pages at a time. This method takes less memory than printing the entire document at one time. Decrease the page range until the entire range is printed.

    -or-

  • Print the document to a Hewlett-Packard PCL-compatible printer instead of to a PostScript printer.
