The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95, version 4.1
  • Microsoft Access, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you save a file with the filename enclosed in quotation marks, such as "Test.abc", if you then click an item in the Save As Type box, the filename within quotation marks changes.

For example, if you enter "Test.abc" in the File Name box in the Save As dialog box in Microsoft Word, if you then click Text Only (*.txt) in the Save As Type box, the filename changes to "Test.txt".

CAUSE

Normally, when you save a file using the Save As dialog box, the filename extension changes to match the file type listed in the Save As Type box. If you change the extension or add an extension, the default extension is appended to the new extension.

For additional information about this behavior, please see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

   ARTICLE-ID: Q131161
TITLE : OFF95: Default File Extension Added to Filename Using Save As

You can avoid having the additional extension added to your filename by enclosing the filename in quotation marks. However, if you change the item selected in the Save As Type box after you enter the filename, the extension on the filename changes, even when the filename is enclosed in quotation marks.

RESOLUTION

To prevent the filename extension that you enter in the Save As dialog box from changing, select the file type first by clicking the desired type in the Save As Type list, before you enter the filename in the File Name box.

For example, to save a document in Microsoft Word as a Text file with the name "Test.abc", do the following:

  1. In the document, click Save As on the File menu.

  2. In the Save As Type list, click Text Only (*.txt).

  3. In the File Name box, enter the filename with quotation marks, for example "Test.abc".

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
