The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0-CD

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Office Setup program using the Add/Remove Office Programs command (Office Shortcut Bar) or the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box (Control Panel), the following message appears:

Please insert your Microsoft Office 95 CD 1

This behavior occurs even if the Office compact disc (CD) is currently located in the CD-ROM drive on your computer. Additionally, if you click Cancel, you receive the following error message:

   Setup Initialization Error
Setup cannot run without your program's diskettes.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you run the Office Setup program from a CD using the Add/Remove Office Programs command on the Office Shortcut Bar, or the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel. Normally, when you run a Setup program from the Office Setup And Uninstall dialog box or the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, if the Setup file for that program is currently available on a floppy disk, a CD, or a network drive, Windows runs the Setup program for that application. However, when you run the Office Setup program on CD using either of these dialog boxes, Windows asks you to insert the CD that contains the Setup program.

Additionally, if you click Cancel, you receive the second error message described above indicating that Setup cannot be run without the program's disks, even though you installed Office from a CD.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this behavior, run Setup from the Office CD instead of from the Office Setup And Uninstall dialog box or the Add/Remove Programs dialog box.

To work around this behavior, when you receive the first error message described above, make sure the Office CD is inserted in your CD-ROM drive, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
