The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0-CD

SYMPTOMS

When you insert the Microsoft Office compact disc in the CD-ROM drive on your computer, your computer may be restarted when you move your mouse pointer over one of the buttons in the Setup screen.

CAUSE

When you insert the Microsoft Office version 7.0 compact disc (CD) in your CD-ROM drive, the Microsoft Office For Windows 95 screen appears on your computer screen. This behavior occurs because of the Autorun feature on the CD that automatically displays this screen and helps you install Microsoft Office.

When you position your mouse pointer over one of the three buttons on this screen, a description of the button appears on the screen, and a sound plays on your computer. On certain computers, this feature has been reported to restart the computer; that is, when you position your mouse pointer over one of the buttons on the screen, the computer is restarted.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, avoid using the buttons on the Microsoft Office For Windows 95 screen by using either of the following methods.

Method 1: To disable the Autorun feature on the Office 95 CD, hold down the

SHIFT key while you insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive. Continue
holding the SHIFT key down until your computer has finished
reading the CD-ROM drive (the light goes off). You can then run
Setup from My Computer or Windows Explorer by double-clicking the
Setup.exe file on the root of the Office CD.

Method 2: After you insert the Office CD, close the Microsoft Office For
Windows 95 window by clicking the Close button on the window's
          title bar.

Method 3: To disable the Auto Insert Notification setting for your
CD-ROM drive, do the following (note that this method should be
used only as a temporary workaround unless you want the Windows
Notification feature disabled for all CDs):

          a. On the Windows taskbar, click Start. Click Settings, and then
             click Control Panel.

          b. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon. In the System
Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab.

          c. In the list of devices, double-click CDROM. Click your
             specific CD-ROM device.

          d. Click Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the
Settings tab. Under Options, select the Auto Insert
Notification check box, and click OK.

          e. In the System Properties dialog box, click OK. Close Control
             Panel.
