OFF95: Error Reading CD-ROM Drive During Setup

Last reviewed: March 27, 1997
Article ID: Q135654
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use a compact disc as a qualifying upgrade product for Microsoft Office 7.0, you may receive a blue screen with the following error message:

Error reading CD-Rom. Please insert CD-ROM 0712 with serial
number NNNN-NNNN in drive D: If the CD-ROM is in the drive,
   it may require cleaning.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reinsert the Office compact disc. When the auto-run screen reappears, do not click Install. Instead, minimize the auto- run screen and continue running Setup.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs only when the qualifying product does not reside on the hard disk and you attempt to locate the qualifying product on a compact disc. Setup does not check for a qualifying product on the CD-ROM drive and displays the error message. After you reinsert the Office compact disc, the Setup program continues. Note that after you reinsert the Office compact disc, the auto-run screen appears. Clicking Install causes another instance of Setup to start. You then receive the following error message:

Another copy of setup is already running. Complete the other
   setup operation or restart Windows.

Rather than clicking Install, minimize the auto-run screen and continue running the first instance of Setup.
