SYMPTOMS

When you view the properties of a file in the Open dialog box, or when you display the Open dialog box while the Properties button is selected, your application may hang.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the application accesses the properties of a damaged file. For example, when you use the Open command in your application (File menu), if the Properties button is selected, and if a file in the current folder is damaged, the application may hang because it cannot return the file properties.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, when a file in a specific folder is causing this problem, try to determine the file that is damaged by doing the following:

  1. Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to move all of the files from the current folder (the folder that is causing the problem in your application) to a temporary folder.

  2. Move one or two files at a time back to the current folder.

  3. In your application, click Open on the File menu. (Or click the Open A Document button on the Office Shortcut Bar).

  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 above until the problem occurs.

MORE INFORMATION

You can use any of the following buttons in the Open dialog box instead of the Properties button, even if a file in the current folder is damaged:
