The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Project for Windows 95, version 4.1

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Microsoft Mail button on the Microsoft toolbar, the following symptoms may occur even if Microsoft Mail is installed on your computer (these symptoms assume that Microsoft Exchange is NOT installed on your computer).

Microsoft Word

You receive the following error message:

   Word could not locate or start Microsoft Mail.

Microsoft PowerPoint

You receive the following error message:

   PowerPoint could not locate or start Microsoft Mail

Microsoft Excel

You receive the following error message (if Microsoft Mail is not running):

   Cannot run 'MSMAIL.EXE'. The program or one of its components is
   damaged or missing.

NOTE: In Microsoft Excel, if Microsoft Mail is running, (and if Exchange is not installed) the Microsoft Mail program is activated when you click the Microsoft Mail button.

Microsoft Project

Your computer beeps.

CAUSE

These symptoms occur if Microsoft Exchange is not installed on your computer (even if Microsoft Mail IS installed on your computer). You cannot run Microsoft Mail using the Microsoft Mail button on the Microsoft toolbar. The Microsoft Mail button on the Microsoft Toolbar is designed to start Microsoft Exchange (a 32-bit mail program), not Microsoft Mail (a 16- bit mail program).

WORKAROUND

In Microsoft Project ONLY, to run Microsoft Mail from the Microsoft Mail button, do the following:

  1. Press and hold down the CTRL Key, and click the Microsoft Mail button.

  2. In the Command box, change the text that appears from the following

          AppExecute Command:="Exchng32.exe"

    to:

          AppExecute Command:="MSMail.exe"

  3. Click OK.
