SYMPTOMSWhen you use the /q switch to run a quiet mode installation of Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0 or Microsoft Office 97 for Windows from a CD-ROM, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office 95 Setup was not completed successfully. CAUSEWhen you install Microsoft Office from a compact disc, you are prompted for a CD Key. In an automated process such as the quiet mode installation, you are not prompted for product identification. This identification is required for the completion of setup. Without the identification, the Setup program fails and you receive the error message.
RESOLUTIONWhen you begin the workstation installation, type the following on the command line
<drive>:<path>\setup /q /k"1234567890"where <drive> is the location of your CD-ROM drive, <path> is the path to the Setup program, and the ten digits in quotation marks (eleven in Office 97) are the CD Key number located on the orange sticker on the back of your compact disc case. Entering this command at the command line enters the CD Key for the product identification process involved during the installation. This is not the case for disk installations--the product identification code is written onto the disk and does not require user input.
MORE INFORMATIONQuiet mode installation is an installation option for network administrators to automate installations, usually from administrative installations to a network server. The quiet mode allows the administrator to install Microsoft Office without being prompted for input, which allows an unattended installation. This type of installation is not recommended because it provides a typical installation and does not allow you to specify user and company names.
