SUMMARY

This article contains a summary of the known issues that may occur when you run Microsoft Office on a Power Macintosh that contains a 603 or 604 PowerPC processor, or when you run Microsoft Office on a Power Macintosh that is running System 7.5.2.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Office Programs Start Slowly

Issue:

When you start a Power Macintosh program on a Power Macintosh computer
that runs System 7.5.2 with virtual memory enabled, the Code Fragment
Manager (CFM) unnecessarily clears the cache of program code
information. Because the information must be reloaded again before the
program can start, the start up time takes longer than expected.

This problem is due to a lack of optimization between the read only
memory (ROM) chips in some classes of Power Macintosh computers, most
notably, computers with a 603 or 604 PowerPC processor, and the CFM that
ships with System 7.5.2. This problem may also occur on a Power
Macintosh computer with a 601 processor.

Overview of the Workarounds:
  • Install System 7.5.3.
  • Disable Virtual Memory. If necessary, obtain a third-party memory manager program such as Connectix RAM Doubler version 1.6x.

NOTE: To use Connectix RAM Doubler on a Power Macintosh computer, you must obtain version 1.6x

Error Messages Appear When You Run Microsoft Office Manager on System 7.5.2

Issue:

You may encounter this problem when you use MOM to start a program on a
Macintosh that runs System 7.5.2 or when you shut down the machine.

Overview of the Workarounds:
  • Install System 7.5.3.
  • Send the customer the "Office Manager Patch for 7.5.2." To use this patch, the customer must have Microsoft Office version 4.2.1 or 4.2.1a installed. The patch is also available online.
