OFF: Adding Toolbar to OSB Creates .tbb or .tmp Files

SUMMARY

When you add a toolbar to the Office Shortcut Bar, the Office Shortcut Bar generates several toolbar files in the Office\Shortcut Bar folder. These files store information about the appearance of the toolbar; for example, they store information about color and smoothing options. Depending on the options that you choose, the Office Shortcut Bar may generate up to five files.

The following tables list the toolbar files and the information that each file stores if you create a toolbar that you name "Toolbar."

NOTE: In this example, the .tmp files have the number 5062 in the file name. Your files will probably not use this same number.

* NOTE: You may see one or more files named Toolbar#.tbb, where # is an integer starting with 1. When you make a modification to the toolbar, for example, when you add or delete a button, a new Toolbar#.tbb is created and the integer represented by # is incremented. The Toolbar#.tbb file with the highest integer is the most current version of the file and is used by the Office Shortcut Bar. Older versions of the file are retained but are not active.

** NOTE: The Smooth check box is only available if your computer has a high- resolution monitor. Because this feature requires more memory, you may want to use this option only if you are using a high performance computer.

To add a new toolbar to the Office Shortcut Bar, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click the Office Toolbar. Click Customize on the shortcut menu.

  2. Click the Toolbars tab in the Customize dialog box.

  3. Click Add Toolbar.

  4. Type the name of the toolbar in the "Create a New, Blank Toolbar Called" box, and click OK.

You can adjust the way color is displayed for all toolbars on the Shortcut Bar. To do this, click the View tab in the Customize dialog box, and either select the Use Standard Toolbar Color check box (which displays the toolbars with the Windows 95 color scheme) or select the Gradient Fill check box and the Smooth check box. Gradient fill means that the color on the toolbar fades to the right.

You may open and edit the Office 95 .tbb files in Microsoft Paintbrush. To edit a .tbb file in Paintbrush and view the changes in the Office Shortcut Bar, you must close the Office Shortcut Bar before you open the file in Paintbrush. If you do not close the Office Shortcut Bar before you open the file in Paintbrush, the Office Shortcut Bar ignores the .tbb file you edited because the Office Shortcut Bar creates and uses a newer Toolbar#.tbb file.

NOTE: You cannot modify the .tbb files if you are running Office for Windows 95 on Windows NT 3.51.
