The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT, version 3.51

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Office Shortcut Bar with the ToolTips option enabled on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT 3.51, the following message may appear:

System process out of virtual memory. Your system is running low on
virtual memory. Please close some applications. You can then start the
system option in the control panel and choose the virtual memory button
to create an additional paging file or increase the size of your current
   paging file.

Then, you must either close several programs, or you must restart your computer.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are met:

  • You leave the mouse pointer positioned over a button on the Office Shortcut Bar while ToolTips are enabled.

    -and-

  • You are running Windows NT 3.51.

This behavior is especially noticeable when the Office Shortcut Bar remains in focus for long periods of time. For example, you may notice this behavior when you click Screen Saver on the Office Shortcut Bar to start a screen saver.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable the ToolTips option on the Office Shortcut Bar. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. Use the right mouse button to click a portion of the Office Shortcut Bar that does not display a button.

  2. Click Customize, and click the View tab.

  3. Clear the check box next to Show ToolTips, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT. Office 7.0a and 7.0b automatically turn off Tooltips if the Setup program detects that Windows NT 3.51 is installed. You can turn on Tooltips in the Office Shortcut Bar if Service Pack 4.0 for Windows NT is installed.

MORE INFORMATION

The Office Shortcut Bar loses system resources because it uses the system ToolTip control. This control loses resources when you use it on a computer running Windows NT 3.51. This behavior also applies to any program that uses the system ToolTips control.

If you disable the ToolTips option and then re-enable it, the problem will reoccur.
