SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup program in maintenance mode and click Remove All, Setup may remove the Inbox icon from the desktop.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are met:

  • You run Setup in maintenance mode and click Remove All.

    -and-

  • You click Remove All in any of the "Remove Shared Component" dialog boxes that are displayed.

    -or-

  • You click Remove in the "Remove Shared Component" dialog box for Windows Messaging.

RESOLUTION

To prevent Setup from removing the Inbox icon from the desktop, use one of the following methods:

  • Click Remove None in any of the "Remove Shared Component" dialog boxes.

    -or-

  • Click Keep in the "Remove Shared Component" dialog box for Windows Messaging.

If Setup already removed the Inbox icon from the desktop, you must reinstall the Windows Messaging client (Microsoft Exchange or Microsoft Outlook) in order to restore the icon.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of the Microsoft Office.

MORE INFORMATION

When you run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup program in maintenance mode, and you click Remove All, one or more dialog boxes that contain the following message may appear:

   Remove Shared Component

<Shared component> is a shared component, and there may
be other applications using it. If you are sure you want to
remove it, click the Remove button. Otherwise, click the
   Keep button.

If you want to remove all shared components, click the
Remove All button. If you do not want to remove any of
shared components, click the Remove None button.

where <Shared component> is the name of a shared Office program.

The dialog boxes will contain four buttons: Keep, Remove, Remove None, and Remove All.

When you click Remove All, or when you click Remove when <Shared component> is "Windows Messaging", the Setup program removes all files that are related to the Windows Messaging client. These files include the Inbox icon on the desktop.
