MORE INFORMATION

NOTE: After you complete the following steps, it may be necessary to reinstall earlier versions of programs that use the shared components that Microsoft Office 97 uses. For example, to use any of the programs included with Microsoft Office 7.0, it may be necessary to reinstall Microsoft Office 7.0 before the programs work correctly.

To remove Microsoft Office 97 from your computer, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove. If you installed Microsoft Office from a CD, you are prompted to insert the first CD.

If a dialog box appears and notifies you that programs are running, quit the programs, and then click OK.

  3. In the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box, click Remove All.

  4. When you are prompted to remove shared components, click Remove All.

If you are prompted to restart the computer after Setup is completed, do so.

  5. In Windows Explorer, delete the following folders:

          Program Files\Microsoft Office
          Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
          Program Files\Common Files\ODBC
          Windows\Temp\Vbe

NOTE: Before you delete the Microsoft Office folder, make sure that you do not have other programs, such as Microsoft Project or Microsoft Publisher, installed in the Microsoft Office folder. If you delete the Microsoft Office folder, you may need to reinstall these programs.

NOTE: Deleting the Microsoft Office folder also deletes the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart folder, which may contain personal files. Ensure that all personal files are removed from this folder before deleting it. Also, deleting the Microsoft Office folder deletes the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates folder, which may contain personal templates. Ensure that all personal files, including custom macros, are removed from this folder before you delete it.

  6. In Windows Explorer, delete the files in the following folders.

        Windows Folder
        --------------

        Artgalry.cag Exchng.ini Mso97.acl Odbc.ini

        Twunk_32.exe Wininit.ini <username>.acl <username>.pcb

NOTE: <username> is the name of the user who is logged on to the
computer. If multiple users log on to the computer using different
user names, each user has separate .acl and .pcb files. All of these
        files can be deleted.

  7. On the Start menu, click Run. If you are using Windows 95 in the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK. If you are using Windows NT in the Open box, type "regedt32" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95 or Windows NT. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs after you edit it. For information about how to do this, click Help in Registry Editor, click the Contents tab, and click to view the "Restoring the Registry" topic.

  8. Select the following key in the registry:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
