Last reviewed: December 6, 1996
Article ID: Q159559
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you move your pointer over a button on the Toolbar, the ToolTip for the button may not be displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you press the ESC key and click a toolbar button or menu command. For example, you click the Font box on the Formatting toolbar, and then press ESC once. If you move the pointer over the various toolbar buttons, no ToolTips are displayed. This is because the toolbar or menu still has the focus. This behavior is different than earlier versions of Microsoft Office programs.

RESOLUTION

Press ESC twice to reset the focus. This allows the ToolTips to appear.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of the Microsoft Office programs listed at the beginning of this article.
