SYMPTOMS

When you turn on the "Provide feedback with sound" option in any of the Microsoft Office programs, you may receive the following error message after clicking OK in the Options dialog box:

Microsoft Office Sounds are not installed on your system. To install
them, point to Microsoft on the Web (Help menu) and click Free Stuff
to connect to the Microsoft Web site. Look for the Sounds folder, and
then download and run the file to install and turn on the sounds.

CAUSE

The Microsoft Office Sounds files are not installed when you run the Setup program for Microsoft Office. In order to install the Sounds, you need to run a separate installation program for these files.

RESOLUTION

In order to install the Sounds files, you do not have to connect to the Microsoft World Wide Web site; they are included in the \Valupack folder on the Microsoft Office compact disc. To install the Sounds files, do the following:

  1. Open the \Valupack\Sounds folder on your Microsoft Office compact disc.

  2. Double-click the Sounds.exe file in this folder.

A warning message will appear, alerting you that Sounds will only run under Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0. Click Yes if you are using either of these two operating systems and click No if you are not.

  3. If you clicked Yes in Step 2, read the Microsoft Office 97 Sounds licensing agreement, and then click Yes if you accept the terms of the agreement.

  4. Click OK when the installation is finished.

NOTE: If you do not have the compact disc version of Office, you can download the sound files from the follow World Wide Web address:

   http://www.microsoft.com/OfficeFreeStuff/Office/

To verify the "Provide feedback with sound" setting is working, do the following in Microsoft Excel:

  1. Enter the following into a new workbook:

    A1: 4 A2: 3 A3: 7

  2. Select cell A1 and click Sort on the Data menu.

  3. In the Sort dialog box, click OK.

You should hear a sound as the data is sorted.

STATUS

This is by design of Microsoft Excel 97.
