The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Office Setup in maintenance mode and remove the templates, the Setup program removes database files that were modified by the templates. For example, Common.xls and Expdb.xls database files are removed.

The following templates are affected:

   Expense Statement.xlt
   Invoice.xlt
   Invdb.xls.
   Purchase Order.xlt
   Podb.xls

CAUSE

This problem occurs because removing the Microsoft Office 97 templates in maintenance mode (running setup after you already installed Office) removes all files that Setup installed. The files are removed even though you may have modified them.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, make a backup copy of all Microsoft Excel workbook files before you run Setup and remove files. You can copy the files to a temporary folder on the same hard disk or on a network drive; or you can copy the files to external media, such as a disk or tape backup device.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
