Last reviewed: May 14, 1997
Article ID: Q168517
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Office 97 Setup, and then click Yes to remove an earlier version of Microsoft Office, Setup fails to remove all of the Microsoft Windows registry keys from the earlier version of Office.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You perform a "Run from Network Server" installation to upgrade Microsoft Office 7.0.

    -and-

  • Shared tools (Msapps folder) are on the network server not on the local hard disk.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and user.dat) before you edit the registry.

The following is a list of all the Microsoft Office 7.0 registry keys that remain after you upgrade a Microsoft Office 7.0 "Run from Network Server" installation to a Microsoft Office 97 Custom installation (with all options selected.)
