Off97: Unable to Run Patch After Upgrading from Trial Version

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) Patch, you may receive the following error message:

   The patch has determined that your installation of Office cannot be
   updated at this time.  Shut down all running applications and re-run the
   patch, if the problem persists please consult the Microsoft Knowledge
   Base at http://www.microsoft.com/kb.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You install, and then remove Microsoft Office 97 for Windows, Kinko's Edition.

    -and-

  • You install Microsoft Office 97 Standard Edition or Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition for Windows.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, copy the following files from the Office folder on the Microsoft Office CD to the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder on your hard disk:

   Mso7enu.dll
   Mso97.dll

After you replace these files, you can install the Microsoft Office 97 SR-1 Patch.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
