OFF98: Errors Running Office Programs from Another Computer

• Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
• Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
• Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Excel, you may receive the following error message:

   One of your object libraries (Excel Object Library) is missing or
   damaged. Please install the program again.

  'VBA Extensibility Library (1)' could not be loaded,

   followed by:

      Out of memory.

   -or-

   Unexpected critical error: can't start program.

   -or-

   The Visual Basic Environment could not be initialized.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if all of the following conditions are true:

• You are running the Microsoft Office programs from another Macintosh computer.

  -and-

• The entire hard disk of the Macintosh computer from which you are running Microsoft Office is shared.

  -and-

• The hard disk of the Macintosh computer from which you are running Microsoft Office has the same name as the hard disk on your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
