WordArt: GP Fault Occurs with Long, Slanted Text Strings

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft WordArt, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Publisher, versions 1.0 and 1.0a
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 3.0
  • Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1

SUMMARY

If you try to embed a WordArt object in Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows or Microsoft Publisher, you may receive the following error message:

Word Art caused a General Protection Fault in module
     WORDART.EXE at 0001:46A3

This will occur if the WordArt object has all the following characteristics:
  • A single line of text has more than 31 characters.
  • The Point Size option is set to anything other than Best Fit.
  • The Style is set to Slant Up (More).

This error message occurs as soon as you select all three of these characteristics; it appears before you press the OK button.

You can avoid this problem by pressing the Apply button after you change the Style option to Slant Up (More) but before you select a point size (or by pressing the Apply button after you select a point size but before you change the Style to Slant Up [More]).

This problem does not occur when you embed an object in Microsoft PowerPoint 2.0 for Windows, Windows Write, or Word for Windows; nor does it not occur if you copy the WordArt object from one of these applications into PowerPoint 3.0 or Publisher and then edit the object.
