OL97: Cannot Edit a URL When Composing a Mail Message

Last reviewed: January 19, 1998
Article ID: Q158110
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 97

SYMPTOMS

After you type a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) into a new mail message, you cannot edit the URL by placing the pointer on the URL with a mouse click; instead, this action activates the hyperlink.

CAUSE

Microsoft Outlook resolves the URL address to a hyperlink immediately when you have typed the protocol portion of the URL, that is http:// or ftp://. If you click a resolved URL, Outlook will try to activate the hyperlink.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

Use the ARROW keys to move the pointer onto the text of a URL instead of clicking the URL with the mouse. Once the pointer is located within the URL text, you can edit it as needed. Or, if you use Microsoft Word as the default e-mail editor, you can use the right mouse button to click the URL, and then click Update Field on the menu that appears to edit the URL's text.
