OL97: Converting Windows Cardfile Files to Outlook

SUMMARY

Microsoft does not provide a converter to import Windows Cardfile files into Microsoft Outlook 97. This article describes two workarounds for importing these files.

WORKAROUND #1

Use the Import/Export Add-on Pack for Schedule+ Version 7.0, to import the Windows Cardfile file into Schedule+ then into Outlook, as follows:

  1. Install the Import/Export Add-on Pack for Schedule+ 7.0:

    a. Download the Import/Export Pack, from Microsoft's web site at:

            Http://www.microsoft.com/scheduleplus/freestuff/impconv/default.htm
    
       b. Choose to save the file to disk at:
    
             c:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office
    
       NOTE: Because the Microsoft Web site is constantly updated, the site
       address may change without notice. If this occurs, link to the Microsoft
       home page at the following address:
    
          http://www.microsoft.com/
    
    

  2. Expand and run the downloaded converter program:

    a. Expand the downloaded converter programs by double clicking,

          Sch_suplfilt.exe in the, c:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office
          folder.
    

    b. Run the converter by double-clicking the file Ilxlate.exe In the,

          c:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office folder.
    

    c. On the Transfer menu, click Import.

    d. On the Available Systems list, click Windows Cardfile/Calendar

          and click OK.
    

    e. In the Section, drop-down list, click Cardfile.

    f. Type the name or browse to the Cardfile file to be converted.

    g. On the Fields tab, map the Cardfile fields to the appropriate

          Schedule+ Contact fields, and click Import.
    

    RESULTS: This will generate a Schedule+ default.scd file.

  3. Import the Default.scd file into Outlook.

    a. On Outlook's File menu, click Import and Export.

    b. Click, Import from Schedule+ or another program or file, and

          click Next.
    

    c. Click Schedule+ 7.0 and click, Next.

    d. Type the name or browse to the Default.scd file and click, Next.

    e. Place a checkmark in Import "default.scd(Contacts)" into "Contacts"

          and click, Map Custom Fields.
    

    f. Map the incoming Schedule+ fields to the appropriate Outlook Contact

          fields and click OK, then Finish.
    

    RESULTS: The default.scd file is imported into Outlook.

WORKAROUND #2

You can import Windows Cardfile files into Outlook using a three step process, as follows:

Step 1 - Print the Cardfile Records to a Text File

  1. In Windows 3.x, click the Printers icon in Control Panel.

  2. Configure the Generic/Text Only printer driver to the FILE port.

  3. Open Cardfile and load the .crd file you want to import.

  4. On the File menu, click Print Setup.

  5. In the Print Setup dialog box, click the Specific Printer option, click the Generic/Text Only driver and then click OK.

  6. On the File menu, click Page Setup, clear the Header and Footer check boxes, set the Left Margin to zero, and click OK.

  7. Click Print All, on the File menu.

  8. Type a name for the file including the desired path and a .txt extension, then click OK.

Step 2 - Manipulate the Comma-Delimited File in Word

  1. Convert the text file to a table:

    a. In Word, open the .txt print file from above.

    b. On the Edit menu, click Select All.

    c. On the Table menu, click Convert Text to Table.

    d. In the Number of columns window, type 18, click "Separate text at

          Paragraphs", and click OK.
    

    e. Delete any completely empty columns by selecting them, then on the

          Table menu click Delete Columns.
    

    f. Verify that the fields of each record are in the correct column.

          Those that are not must be manually adjusted.
    

    g. Place the cursor in the first row of the table and from the Table

          menu click Insert Rows.
    

    h. In the newly inserted row, type a field name for each column.

  2. Convert the table to tab-delimited text:

    a. On the Table menu, click Select Table.

    b. On the Table menu, click "Convert Table to Text."

    c. In the Convert Table To dialog box, click "Separate text with Tabs"

          and click OK.
    

  3. Enclose fields in quotation marks and replace tabs with commas:

    a. Type a double quotation mark in front of the first character in the

          file.
    

    b. On the Edit menu, click Replace.

    c. In the Find what window type (^p) without the parentheses, in the

          Replace with window, type ("^p") without the parentheses, and click
          Replace All.
    

    d. In the Find what window type (^t) without the parentheses, in the

          Replace with window, type (",") without the parentheses, click
          Replace All and click Close.
    

  4. Save the comma-delimited file:

    a. On the File menu, click Save As.

    b. Type a name for the file and in the Save as type window click Text

          Only and click Save.
    

Step 3 - Import the Tab-delimited File into Outlook

  1. On Outlook's File menu, click Import and Export.

  2. Click "Import from Schedule+ or another program or file" and click Next.

  3. Click "Comma Separated Values" and click Next.

  4. Browse to, or type the name of the comma-delimited file and click Next.

  5. Click the folder into which you want to import the records and click Next.

  6. Place a checkmark beside Import "<filename.txt>" into "<foldername>" folder.

  7. Click "Map Custom Fields" and map the incoming Cardfile fields to the appropriate Outlook fields and click OK and Finish.
