The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 97

Doc ID.

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

The option for logging an Internet Mail session defaults to off after installing the Internet Mail Enhancement Patch for Microsoft Outlook 97 (IMEP). To turn the option on, you must modify the Windows registry. This article describes how to make that modification.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

RESOLUTION

When you turn the Internet Mail logging option on, a new subfolder is created under the Windows folder. This sub folder has the same name as your Internet Mail Service. The sub folder contains 3 files for logging various activities:

   InetXP.txt

   Pop3log.txt

   Smtplog.txt

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

To save your IMEP sessions in a log file you must edit the registry as follows:

  1. On Outlook's File menu, click "Exit and Log Off."

  2. Click the Start button, and point to Run. In the Open box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and click OK to run the Windows Registry Editor.

  3. Move to and click to select the following key:

          Hkey_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Internet Mail and News/Mail

  4. Right-click "Log Outlook (0/1)" in the list of registry keys and click Delete.

  5. On the Edit menu, point to New and click DWORD Value.

  6. Type the name "Log Outlook (0/1)" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.

  7. Right-click the new "Log Outlook (0/1)" key and click Modify.

  8. In the Value data window, type "1" (without the quotation marks), click OK, and close the Registry Editor.

NOTE: To change the location of the log files, right-click the "Log File (Outlook)" key and change the Value data to the folder into which the log file should be placed.
