  • Microsoft Outlook 97

SYMPTOMS

If you use Microsoft Outlook 97 with Lotus Notes as your e-mail client, you may occasionally receive the following message:

An application error has occurred and a NOTES.RIP is being generated
in: unknown Exception: access violation <XXXX>, Address: <XXXX> Done
generating file. Click button below to exit.

NOTE: NOTES.RIP may be replaced with a different filename. <XXXX> is a placeholder for hexadecimal addresses.

CAUSE

This may be caused by damaged or mismatched Msvcrt20.dll and Msvcrt40.dll application extension files.

RESOLUTION

Rename and replace Msvcrt20.dll and Msvcrt40.dll with copies from your Microsoft Office 97 (or Microsoft Outlook 97) CD-ROM.

Rename the Existing Files

  1. If Outlook is still running, on the File menu, click Exit and Log Off.

  2. Click the Start button, click Shut Down, click to select, "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode," and then click Yes.

  3. After your computer restarts, at the Command prompt, type

          cd\windows\system

    then press ENTER.

NOTE: If you are using Windows NT 4.0, use

          cd\windows\system32

  4. Use the MS-DOS Rename command to change the name of both Msvcrt20.dll and Msvcrt40.dll. For example:

         ren msvcrt40.dll msvcrt40.old

    then press ENTER.

  5. At the Command prompt, type

         cd..

    and then press ENTER.

  6. At the Command prompt, type

         win

and then press ENTER. This will start Windows and any programs in your Startup folder.

Replace the Files

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, then click Windows Explorer.

  2. Click the plus sign (+) beside the Windows folder to display its contents.

  3. Insert your Office 97 CD-ROM into the drive, then click the icon in the Exploring window.

  4. On the Tools menu, point to Find, then click Files or Folders. Type msvcrt in the Named field. Click your CD-ROM drive in the Look in: list and click to select Include subfolders, and then click Find Now.

  5. While pressing the CTRL key, click to select Msvcrt20.dll and Msvcrt40.dll in the Search Results list, then drag the two files to the \Windows\system folder. If you are using Windows NT 4.0, drag the files to \Windows\system32 folder.

  6. On the File menu of Find Files, click Close.

  7. On the File menu of Exploring, click Close.

  8. Click the Start button, click Shut Down, click Restart the computer, and then click Yes.
