The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 97

SYMPTOMS

When you use, Whole Earth Networks (The Well), as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), messages queued to be sent in the Microsoft Outlook 97 Outbox may generate a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) from the ISP.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by not having current authentication on the ISP server.

RESOLUTION

You must re-establish authentication on the ISP server every 30 minutes by checking for new mail, then waiting one minute before sending mail. After one minute, open each unsent message in the Sent Items folder and click "Resend this Message" on the Tools menu.

MORE INFORMATION

Whole Earth Networks has implemented new security measures for their clients. These new measures can give the impression that the Internet Mail service in Outlook is not functioning correctly.

You must be authenticated by The Well before sending mail.

To Establish Authentication on the ISP Server

  1. On the Tools menu, click "Check for New Mail" (or press F5).

  2. Wait one minute for the authentication process to complete.

This procedure establishes a 30-minute window of time, in which you can send and receive mail. After 30 minutes, you must be re-authenticated by repeating the steps above.

To Resend Messages for Which You Received NDR Messages

  1. Click to select the Sent Items folder.

  2. Open the message for which you received the NDR.

  3. On the Tools menu, click to select, Resend This Message.
