PC Win: WINMAIL.DAT File Appears in 2.1 Clients

SYMPTOMS

If you send one or more enclosures with a message using version 3.0, 3.0b, or 3.2 of Microsoft Mail for Windows to a version 2.1 of Microsoft Mail for PC Networks workstation, an extra attachment with the name WINMAIL.DAT appears. The system may hang while trying to save this file even though it should not be saved; it is used by Mail for Windows only as a resource file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in versions 3.0, 3.0b, and 3.2 of Microsoft Mail for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
