SOCKS Protocol Not Work Through Proxy Server 1.0

Last reviewed: December 31, 1997
Article ID: Q160706

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Proxy Server version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

Internet applications configured to use the SOCKS protocol will fail to function through version 1.0 of the Microsoft Proxy Server.

CAUSE

Proxy Server 1.0 does not support the SOCKS protocol.

WORKAROUND

If your Internet client is Windows based, install the Winsock Proxy client. The SOCKS feature on most SOCKS-capable applications can be disabled and allow the program to use the Winsock Proxy service.

If the application is running on a non-Windows platform, the application will not be proxied. Instead applications capable of using the CERN protocol can be used with the Web Proxy Service on the Microsoft Proxy Server.
