Enable Access Control Option Is Not Available

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Proxy Server versions 1.0 and 2.0

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Proxy Server, the Enable Access Control option (in Microsoft Internet Service Manager, Web Proxy Service Properties, Permissions) may not be available.

CAUSE

The Enable Access Control option for the Web Proxy Service Properties is restricted because Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) is configured to use Anonymous as the only authentication method.

WORKAROUND

  1. Open Microsoft Internet Service Manager, WWW Service Properties.

  2. Under the Password Authentication selection, click the Authentication method the client computers will use when being authenticated by the Proxy Server; Basic (Clear Text) and/or Microsoft Windows NT Challenge Response (NTLM) authentication can be selected.

These authentication methods are to be used if you want to restrict access to the Proxy Server. If you want all clients to have access to the Proxy Server, then you should use Anonymous authentication.
