SYMPTOMS

When running Inetcfg.exe in rebuild mode to rebuild a mailbox folder with a large index file and little free disk space (for example, if the current index file is 10 MB and the amount of free space is 5 MB), you may receive the following error message:

Cannot write index entry in index file X for mail message Y
   Index File not created! Exiting...

You would expect to see a message indicating that the real reason for the failure is because the disk is full.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
