BUG: RPC Stops When Remote Server Cycled

SYMPTOMS

When multiple front-ends are executing RPCs through an OS/2 SQL Server to two different Open Data Services (ODS) servers, if one of the ODS servers is shut down and then restarted, all remote procedure executions by the OS/2 SQL Server will be suspended. It will still be possible to connect to the SQL Server and run queries. Executing SP_WHO on the SQL Server will show that the site handler for the newly restarted remote server is not present.

CAUSE

While attempting to re-establish the connection between SQL Server and the remote server, the site handler setup fails at a point that causes other RPC attempts to become suspended.

WORKAROUND

If the recently shut-down ODS server is stopped and restarted again, RPC execution through the SQL Server to the remote servers will resume normal functioning.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 4.2 for OS/2. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
