The information in this article applies to:

  - Microsoft SQL Server version 4.2 for Windows NT

When attempting to connect to SQL Server for Windows NT from a client machine over the network, the following message is received:

   Msg 17835, Level 14, State 1
   Configured for local access only.

This indicates that you have the desktop version which is designed for access from a local single user from the desktop only. To confirm if you have the Desktop version, check your SQL Server product box and the disks which mentions the word Desktop.

This version does not allow connections over the network and is meant to be accessed by a single user on the SQL Server machine only.
