BUG: BCP Fails When Entry in Format File Has No Matching Data

SYMPTOMS

The SQL Server for Windows NT version of BCP.EXE fails when a entry in a format file does not have corresponding data in the input data file.

When BCP.EXE is run from the command line using a format file in this scenario, the following error is displayed:

   Starting copy...
   BCP copy in failed

WORKAROUND

Use BCP.EXE for MS-DOS under Windows NT or simply remove the entry from the format file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 4.21. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
