INF: Specifying Connection String for an Alternate Pipe

SUMMARY

A non MS-DOS-based client can receive Error Msg 10004, Sev 9, State 9, 

   Unable to connect: SQL Server is unavailable or does not exist
when using a Connection String using directions in the "Configuration Guide," page 105.

The Configuration Guide incorrectly states the Connection String to connect to SQL Server running on an alternate pipe name.

In step 5 of the section on setting up server connections for non MS-DOS- based clients, it gives the following as an example of the Connection String for connecting to SQL Server using an alternate pipe name: 

   \pipe\alt1\query
This is incorrect, the example should be: 

   \\<server name>\pipe\alt1\query
The exception to this is using local pipes on the SQL Server machine itself. The connection string for a Windows NT client using a local pipe should be: 

   \\.\pipe\alt1\query
The connection string for a OS/2 client using a local pipe should be: 

   \pipe\alt1\query
