INF: Backup of Logins with Integrated and Mixed Security

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

In order to backup SQL Server logins, when SQL Server is running Integrated or Mixed Security mode, the NTBackup utility must be used to create a current backup of the Windows NT Registry after new logins are added.

When Windows NT Groups are granted permissions to connect to SQL Server by either the xp_grantlogin extended stored procedure or the SQL Security Manager, the Windows NT Group is granted security permissions in the Windows NT Registry.

To backup the Windows NT Registry with NTBackup, choose to backup the drive that Windows NT is installed on, and select the Backup Registry checkbox on the Backup Information dialog window.

To restore the Windows NT Registry with NTBackup, choose a tape that has the Windows NT Registry on it, restore the drive that Windows NT is installed on, and select the Restore Local Registry check box on the Restore Information dialog window.
